Safer Internet Day School Council Conference

Primary and secondary school council members across fourteen schools in Redbridge debated how they could make the Internet a safer place for young people all over the world as part of Safer Internet Day.
Through using JISC video conferencing services the schools were all able to connect securely with each other and with PCSO Alan Winston and PC Kim Gakhal.

The met police officers both offered the pupils valuable feedback to their presentations on internet safety at home.

 The primary children came up with ideas such as : to work more closely with parents and to create a search engine just for young children.  The secondary school councillors thought that free antivirus spam or spyware for young people aged 18 and under would be a great idea since they cannot always afford to buy it for their computers at home.

The Pastoral Assistant for Year 11 at Oaks Park High School said , "The video conference has made me realise that we need assemblies on internet safety for year groups and that we need to work with parents more closely".

PC Gakhal, who had not used VC technology before to communicate with schools said, "Using secure VC technology to connect to so many pupils in one day for me is excellent.  The feedback I can give to the pupils has greater impact when so many other schools are joining in".

Year 11 pupil, OPHS quoted : It was good to get a range of opinions from different schools so we can have a borough level solution maybe to internet safety for us all.
